Several Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have begun circulating a letter calling for the official re-nomination of Joe Biden to be delayed until the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in August.
As reported by Fox News, the letter was first written by Congressman Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), and expresses concerns about plans to nominate Biden early via a virtual conference call as early as July 21st, nearly one month before the DNC begins on August 19th. Several other Democrats have since agreed with the letter’s message.
“To try to squelch debate and jam this through is a power play of the highest order,” said Congressman Huffman in a statement. “That kind of heavy-handed move is not going to go over well with a lot of people.”
July 21st is the day that the DNC’s credentials committee holds its first meeting, and thus has also been named as a likely date for the virtual nomination of Biden. The ceremonious “nomination” of Biden in Chicago next month would thus be a symbolic gesture rather than an official act.
The plans to nominate Biden early were originally conceived in order to circumvent several state laws that required him to be named as the official nominee ahead of deadlines to appear on state ballots. However, following his disastrous performance in the first debate against former President Donald Trump, the move has been criticized as an effort to undemocratically silence concerns among party members over his capabilities. There have been widespread calls for him to withdraw from the race in favor of a younger and more competent candidate.
Despite this, Biden has stubbornly insisted that he has no intention of dropping out of the race or stepping down from the presidency.
